Everyone has met a canine with bad dog breath. It’s a pain, but necessary – brushing your dog’s teeth. There are many commercial products or you can use a soft child’s toothbrush for brushing your dog’s teeth. Don’t assume that human toothpaste is a good idea. It is not. There are commercial dog toothpastes available from your veterinarian or local pet store.
Brushing your dog’s teeth at least once a day is essential to the overall health of your dog. Teeth can become abscessed, just like they can with people. The infection from the tooth can spread and then your pet will have major problems. Bacteria from your dog’s teeth can enter the bloodstream and spread to its kidney, liver, heart and or even the brain.
Dog Food and Treats
Crunchy food and treats are better for your dog’s health than canned food. There are treats specifically made for dental care that can aid in your dog’s breath, teeth and gum health.
Rescued and Older Dogs Can Have Bad Teeth
Many rescued dogs don’t have the best care before they end up with a rescue group or at a shelter. Those dogs should have their teeth checked by your when they have their regular check-ups.
Dogs don’t often have cavities, but gingivitis and plaque are more common problems. Gingivitis, swelling and reddening of the gums, is also a problem. Clean teeth, that are without plaque and bacteria growing on them will reduce this problem.
Plaque is the build-up of bacteria and food particles around the base of the teeth. Brushing can help keep plaque in check. Usually the upper back teeth are the first to show signs of plaque.
Prophylaxis: Teeth Cleaning
Dogs go under general anesthesia when they have their teeth cleaned and polished. If you are having your pet spayed or neutered you could have the teeth cleaned at the same time. Then you avoid having your dog knocked out twice.
Sometimes teeth need to be removed at the time of cleaning if they have an abscess or excessive cavities.
X-rays are taken during prophylaxis. Cleaning, polishing and flushing of the mouth are also part of the procedure. Each tooth is examined for problems.
Results
As with everything else in your dog’s health, prevention is best. Even if you brush your dog’s teeth every day, it will probably need prophylaxis at some point. Keeping your the teeth clean will reduce the number of times you will need to have its teeth cleaned over its lifespan. A healthy mouth will help your dog live a better life.
